Tenosynovitis results from inflammation of the protective covering, called the sheath, that surrounds a tendon. De Quervain tenosynovitis results from inflammation of the tendon sheath that surrounds two tendons of the thumb.
De Quervain Tenosynovitis
De Quervain tenosynovitis is a condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, causing pain and tenderness. It often affects women, especially during the postpartum period, and people who do repetitive hand or wrist movements, such as lifting or certain work tasks.
A thumb spica splint, anti-inflammatory medication, and injections can help decrease inflammation from De Quervain tenosynovitis. If symptoms do not improve, surgery may be considered to relieve pressure from the affected tendons.
