The spine is made up of bony building blocks called vertebrae. Together, the vertebrae of the spine protect the spinal cord and allow for movement of the body. The spine is primarily divided into cervical (neck), thoracic (mid back), and lumbar (lower back) regions.

    Between the vertebrae of the spine lie the spinal discs. The discs are specialized round pieces of cartilage that provide cushioning and absorb shock, helping the spine to move and support the body.
